When I started this blog, I wasn’t exactly full of joy and light and inspiration. I was in the middle of healing my body and mind from the deep, dark, cold puddle of depression. I wasn’t looking to start a spiritual journey and any mention of personal growth or positive thinking made me roll my eyes.
Let’s be honest, I was kind of a pessimistic bitch. If you are too, you’re definitely in the right place.
I’ve never been a religious person, but I did always have this feeling that there has to be something bigger than me out there. I had believed in the magic of the Universe since I was a child, but that was pretty much it.
I wasn’t relying on that magic! I wasn’t building a relationship with it!
Today, I want to share how you can get started on your spiritual journey — no matter where you are in your life.
If you’re kind of a negative, pessimistic, glass half empty kind of a woman… You’re my people. I got you. I’m here to guide you and give you some simple ideas on how to start your spiritual journey.
Start your spiritual journey by accepting that this is where you are at this moment
We all start somewhere. If you’ve spent a lot of time indulging in gossiping, complaining, pettiness and negativity — you’re okay. It’s just a part of your story. This is not who you are deep within your soul.
Give yourself credit for questioning your current reality.
For acknowledging the possibility that the old patterns and habits don’t serve your highest good anymore. For recognizing that you want to focus on something better.
Embrace the fact that you’re ready to grow, transform, and become the person you were always meant to be.
And that this is the moment when you are finally brave enough to fucking go for it.
There are millions of people who never get to that point.
But you are here. You want to embrace your spiritual side. You want to become a better version of yourself. You’re ready and willing to do the work and step into your goddamn light.
You are exactly where you’re supposed to be.
This is the moment. This is the place. This is what your soul has been waiting for.
Trust that you are always on the right path
Gently remind yourself whenever you need the encouragement.
You are always on the right path. You are constantly guided, supported, and lead to take the right, inspired action for your highest good.
If you are reading this, you are exactly where you’re supposed to be.
This is the exact goddamn post you are supposed to be reading right now.
There is something you are supposed to be learning.
Trust your inner guidance. Your gut, your intuition, your heart, your soul’s desire. It will never steer you wrong. It’s always safe to turn to that inner wisdom within you, listen to it, and follow the guidance you receive.
Take a deep breath.
You are always on the right path.
You are always guided.
You fucking got this.
When you start your spiritual journey, prepare yourself for a wild ride
When you finally decide to step into the light and embark on this life long journey towards growth and compassion and love…
You lose some aspects of your old life.
You lose the negative, petty bullshit thoughts and habits. That’s good! It’s like this whole new world is opening up for you, full of beauty and excitement and possibilities you’ve never even thought of.
But you might also lose friends, family members, or other important people in your life.
Not everybody is ready to let you shine. Some people don’t want you to embrace the you that you are becoming. The real you. The fullest, most beautiful embodiement of you. The person you were always meant to be.
You are allowed to let those people go. Without any guilt, shame, or fear.
This is your journey. You don’t owe anyone anything. You are always on the right path and you always make the right decisions. Trust in that.
You will also stumble and fall.
And that’s okay. Give yourself permission to take all the time you need on this journey.
Trust that the Universe will help you get right back up again. And again and again and again.
Enjoy this ride without putting too much unnecessary pressure on yourself.
Your only job is being here. Being present, allowing yourself to open up, letting your heart shine out into the world. Accepting that you don’t have to do this alone. Surrendering to the Universe and receiving the growth you seek in return. Receiving the guidance and support and love that you are so fucking worthy of.
Becoming the co-creator of your life.
Owning your own power.
Loving that power.
And using it for the highest good of all.
Take small steps towards your spiritual and personal growth
Little right actions, as Gabby Bernstein always says.
Let yourself go with the flow. Listen to your inner guidance and just take those tiny steps in the right direction every single day.
Progress doesn’t come in huge leaps. You won’t find yourself all enlightened on the other side of spiritual prowess in a day or week or even years.
There’s no need to rush and let this new part of your life consume you.
If you jump head first into your spiritual journey, and start practicing yoga, meditation, dabbling in crystals, journaling, praying, gratitude, chanting ancient prayers in Sanskrit, working on your Kundalini activation, Tarot, astrology, naked full moon dances — all at the same time…
Chances are that you’re going to burn out real fucking fast.
Start your journey by choosing one or two spiritual practices that speak to you.
What do you feel called to do?
It might be that you really enjoy reading and you feel like you need to dive into this spiritual and personal growth by reading more books.
So go do that.
Read books. Listen to podcasts. Simply find people to follow on social media and soak up their teachings and their guidance.
What do you feel called to do?
Trust your inner guidance.
Start your spiritual journey by putting a stop to the bitching
Just stop it. You don’t need it. It doesn’t serve you.
It gives you the momentary high of feeling better than others. And you’re not.
There’s no reason to even consider getting on that high horse because you will fall down.
Stop the complaining, whining, gossiping, negative thoughts and harmful self-talk.
Change the way you think about others. Change the way you speak about yourself.
Just leave it all.
You don’t need it where you’re going.
This is the simplest, smallest step towards the light that you can take.
And you can take it today.
Infuse your mind with the light
Step away from all the negativity in your life.
What makes you feel shitty?
All those news notifications with new horror stories every single day?
Certain people in your social media feed or real life?
Get away from the news. Mute all notifications. Unfollow and distance yourself from people who don’t bring light, laughter, and inspiration into your life.
Start pampering your mind with positivity. Read inspiring books, listen to podcasts, learn more about spirituality and personal growth on YouTube. Find new, inspiring people whose message empowers you to embrace your spirituality.
Choose to let go of the old.
Choose to let in the light.
Get on the gratitude train
If we’re talking about choosing the light… We have to talk about gratitude, too.
I’ve talked about all the beautiful reasons why gratitude should be a part of your morning ritual in this post.
Allowing yourself to focus on the good things in your life will give your mind a beautiful release.
It’s a major break from your usual thought patterns. It’s a lot easier to focus on what’s going wrong in your life. It’s easy to choose to not appreciate that you’re reading this post on a fancy, expensive smart phone, that you’re probably wearing clothes of some sort, have a roof over your head and a kitchen full of delicious, healthy foods.
You receive so many blessings on a daily basis and you don’t always take the time to even realize it.
That being said… There’s no need to feign gratitude for the things you know you should be grateful for but maybe actually aren’t. We all take things for granted sometimes! It’s part of being human.
If you can’t truly feel gratitude over clothing and other basics, then be grateful for that fancy new smart phone or your morning cup of coffee. Small steps, remember?
You can start by writing out three things each morning and/or night and reflecting on why you are grateful for them.
How does your amazing, delicious, strong cup of coffee make you feel? Does it energize and motivate you to have a fucking incredible day and accomplish all your goals? Does it wake you up and make you not hate the world so much?
Another way to start showing your gratitude to the Universe is simply speaking out. Have a simple morning chat with the Universe.
Sometimes I’m too sleepy or grumpy to pick up my journal in the mornings. On those days, I just wait for my coffee maker to work its magic and say thank you to the Universe by sharing my thoughts out loud.
I think she likes it.
Enjoy the alone time and learn to quiet your mind
Spending time alone is a beautiful, simple spiritual practice. In these precious moments of solitude, nobody else’s mood, thoughts, or energy can affect you or alter your energy or mood.
Make sure that you prioritize your alone time every single day.
Get closer to what you really think or feel or want out of your life. Learn to know the difference between what your soul truly desires and the limiting beliefs your mind is making up to keep you safe and small.
You can quiet your mind in many different ways and it’s up to you to choose what you feel aligned with. This is your spiritual journey. You make the rules.
- Go for a walk in nature without any distractions.
- Meditate. Close your eyes and breathe.
- Journal to process all your thoughts and feelings, fears and hopes.
- Practice some yoga and enjoy the moving meditation.
Give yourself the time to find your own spiritual practice
Give yourself the knowledge you seek so you can build your own belief system and your own spiritual practice. Read the books, watch the documentaries and videos, listen to the audio books and podcasts and find the people who inspire you.
Then take a step back and listen to your inner guidance to find out what truly resonates with you.
If you’re not that into ‘God’ or ‘angels’ or crystals or those naked full moon dances, leave it.
You are allowed to be inspired and borrow the parts that speak to you.
Whatever doesn’t work for you or feel right to you, let it go.
Fill in the rest with what you feel guided to do.
What spiritual practices fill you with inspiration, hope, the sense of guidance, love and support?
What resonates with you? What do you want to do more of?
What makes you look forward to becoming your best self?
What makes you feel good?
Journal on these things and be patient. Your spiritual practice will unfold in magical ways when you least expect it, as long as you surrender and let your heart remain open.
And remember to have fun.
