I mean… I might not get up at 5 am and have a 10-step 2-hour morning routine but there is one little habit that has become a constant in my life. Journaling. If you’ve never tried journaling for happiness and a more sparkling day, you’re in luck! In this post, I’ll share with you 7 simple journaling ideas for happiness — so you can conquer your day and kick some ass.
So… We’ve established that I’m not a morning person. But I am on this forever kind of mission to lead a life full of as much happiness and all-encompassing sparkling pure joy that I possibly can.
You too? I knew it!
If you, like me, have done the research (so… read the articles, blog posts, self-help books, devoured the podcasts, seen the trainings) you know that mornings are where it’s at.
You have to have the perfect morning routine, get up at 5 am, have some mmmmm delicious kind of slimy brainy-looking chia seed pudding because #powerbreakfast, squeeze in some meditation, yoga — all the things, all the time.
If you don’t, you’re a fucking failure and there’s no hope of you having a productive/non-shitty day.
Oh, you didn’t know that? Well, you do now, girlfriend!
I don’t believe in elaborate, time-consuming morning routines.
But I do believe that you should have some daily habits that
- you actually love doing every single day, and
- genuinely help you feel… well, happier.
Journaling is something I’ve recently had a bit of a love affair with. It helps you explore your inner life, nurture your soul, and keep you grounded throughout your day.

Here are 7 simple yet creative journaling ideas for happiness and personal growth that you can easily start today!
1 | Start your day feeling grateful
Your commitment: 2 minutes
I know, I know. This is like 101 Journaling for Happiness. Everybody raves about gratitude.
For a reason!
This is one of my personal favorites cause it’s just so easy. I’m all about those lazy habits for happiness! You can easily start your day on the positive note by keeping your journal on the bedside table.
When you get up, don’t grab your phone. This isn’t Instagramming and Pinteresting for a happier day, you know.
Okay, so we wake up and grab our journals. Still with me?
Next, I want you to list 3 things you’re super grateful about this morning. Things that you’re genuinely grateful for. Something that makes you sigh out of relief when you think about it. Something you couldn’t imagine living without.
You don’t have to try and dig deep or get all spiritual about it — we all take things for granted sometimes. We’re fucking human.
If grateful isn’t a word that really resonates with you, that’s okay. You can list things that are wonderful in your life. Or stuff that you love about this day. Make it work for you!
Today, writing this, I’m grateful for my new iPhone 8 Plus. Stephen came into my life only a couple of days ago. The romance is still very fresh and exciting, and I can’t resist getting all touchy with my new baby — even in public.
I’m also grateful that it’s a beautiful cool, gloomy day. I’m just not a summer girl, y’all.
And I’m especially grateful that I get to hang out with my friend today and have something spectacularly delicious and unhealthy for lunch.
2 | Get ready to get shit done

You know what’s my favorite morning anthem right now? That song from Mulan, where you must be swift as a coursing river and mysterious as the dark side of the moon.

First, let’s commit to some goals.
I want you to think of 3 things that are your priority today. 3 things that you absolutely WILL accomplish today no matter how small they might be. We have to start small so we can grow!
My goals today?
- I will write this blog post and publish it.
- I will clean the kitchen. I am a strong, independent woman, not a little piglet.
- I will meditate.

3 | Journaling for happiness and a confidence boost
Your commitment: 2 minutes+
Do you have any long term, big picture goals?
Maybe you want to…
- feel confident in a tiny bikini in public
- get fluent in Spanish
- start a business and make that cash money so you can be free and travel the world.
Maybe you desire something else!
Whatever it is, you can easily motivate yourself and get a confidence boost in achieving your goals by affirming them. Like you already have them.
Here we go:
- I am a glorious fucking goddess. I love my body, and my body loves me. I look incredible in this tiny red bikini and my thighs are so strong they could crush a man’s neck. I fucking love myself.
- I am completely fluent in Spanish! My accent is flawless! I can’t believe how easy it was to learn Spanish and add another language to my arsenal. I’m fucking amazing!
- I’m a badass business bitch. I make money in my sleep. I love my work and I’m highly compensated for it. Money flows to me quickly and easily and nothing is stopping me.
You have my permission to borrow mine, or you can invent your own!
Pick a couple, and write them 3-5 times in your journal. The trick is to really feel them. I want you to literally feel like you are this person who has achieved this amazing thing.
4 | Get clear on you schedule and important tasks
Your commitment: 1 minute
You can split the page (representing your day) into three — morning, afternoon, and evening — and quickly write down your commitments, appointments, or tasks that need to be done.
Clarity and peace of mind in less than a minute.
It’s like magic.
5 | Use journaling as a stress-management tool
Your commitment: as goddamn long as it takes. This is important.
As we embark on this exciting self-growth adventure, we occasionally slip back to the old habits.
We get angry. Frustrated. Sometimes we overthink and stress ourselves out for absolutely no reason.
I mean, just think about it. Overthinking is worrying about a problem that has literally not happened. It doesn’t exist. It’s a complete lie. It’s a dirty, vicious lie that you’re brain is making up because its job is to protect you.
So, thank you brain! Thanks for taking care of me. Thanks for having my back, but I’d like to move on now.
You can do this by writing out all your thoughts and worries and letting the negativity out.
It sounds like such a simple thing to do, but don’t underestimate it.
Journaling is an extremely powerful way of letting go. You’ve released the thoughts from your mind to the paper. Your brain goes like ooooh, cool, I don’t have to worry about that anymore cause it’s all done and dealt with.
And just like that, you’re free.
6 | Let the creativity out when the magic strikes
Your commitment: like, 30 seconds
Carrying your journal with you can be a life saver sometimes. We don’t control when the creativity strikes! Usually, it’s in the shower, but for those rare dry-land inspirational occasions you should keep your journal on you at all times.
When the inspiration comes, jot down your brilliant ideas and see how it flows and grows into a complete plan. Those are beautiful moments, you know.
7 | Go to bed feeling inspired and grateful

Journaling before you go to sleep can clear your mind and set you up for a more peaceful night of sleep.
Here are some evening journaling ideas to increase your happiness:
- List all the things you were grateful for today. All the amazing things that happened to you. The kind things you did to someone else. Get to the point where you’re really feeling it. Wow, what a beautiful day it was. I’m so fucking lucky.
- Write down 3 amazing things you accomplished today. Be proud of yourself! You’re worth it.
- Affirm your goals again. And again and again and again.
- If you’re into manifesting and law of attraction, this is your time to work it. You could do a simple scripting exercise to visualize your perfect day. Another idea would be to write out your thank you notes to the Universe for all that you’ve manifested (even if you haven’t yet!). Thank you for my $1,000,000. Thank you for this banging bod I have. I feel extra sexy at all times! Thank you for this beautiful dream house right by the ocean. I can’t believe all my dreams are coming true!
Just write your heart out. Journal your way to happiness and a peaceful night of restful sleep.
